Tips for Storing Clothing

Texas storageAlthough you might be tempted to just toss your clothing in a box and put it in a storage location, you need to put a little more care if you expect your clothing to last through the following season. Using a storage rental is a great way to save space as the seasons change so you can make room for more fabulous clothes and not become buried in tank tops during the winter.

Desiccants will help keep out moisture and are a good idea but do not let them touch the actual clothing.

Preserving Old Photographs

climate control storage unitsIf you are interested in preserving old family photographs, or new ones, for future generations to enjoy, you will need more than just climate control storage units. You will need to acid-free boxes and paper, a black magic marker, and the willingness to browse through your crazy family photos!

Start by getting rid of those magnetic or peel and stick albums. Cheap photo albums and frames will damage the pictures over time. Only use a photo album that is acid-free. Remove any glue, staples, tape, rubber bands, and paper clips. All of said items can stain, scratch, and dent the photographs. If opting for a storage box, use either acid-free cardboard boxes or dry metal boxes. Use a black permanent marker to writes any names and dates on the back. Later generations will appreciate knowing who is who. Don’t use a pen because the ink will fade over time.

Place the photographs in plastic sleeves that do not contain PVC. You can purchase them at a local photo supply store. An budget-friendly alternative is plastic sandwich bags. To store large quantities, layer sheets of acid-free paper in between. Never place the photographs in attics, garages, or basements. Extreme temperature changes and moisture will surely damage them. Climate control storage units are the best option.

Packing Supplies at Every Location

Texas storageIn order to properly storage your belongings in a storage location, you need packing supplies! What’s the point of packing up part of your life if it’s just going to get destroyed when you move it? Items like tissue paper, packing tape, those annoying packing peanuts, and the joyous bubble wrap will be much needed. If you don’t have time to stop off at a packing store, no need to worry. At every single Proguard Storage location they carry all the above mentioned items, and more, so your items always remain safe.

Packing supplies might seem like an added expense that you do not want to bestow upon yourself, but fragile items need to be protected. Extremely fragile items like dinnerware and glass should be wrapped in tissue paper. It’s not costly and a little paper will go a long way. Packing peanuts and bubble wrap, especially, are a bit more costly but are better suited for electronics and larger items. Trying to wrap a television or glass table top in tissue paper will prove to be a waste of time, effort, and money. Bubble wrap is the answer!

With the money you save on the cost of a storage rental, you can put towards a great selection of supplies from Proguard Storage.

A New Year, Clutter Free

storage locationIn just a matter of days we’ll enter a brand new year. Will 2012 be a prosperous year full of great adventures for you? I hope so! But one resolution that shouldn’t be too difficult to accomplish this year is to live clutter free. You’ve been meaning to clean the house for quite some time and now that you’re overflowing with new holiday gifts, the house is even more of a mess.

A storage rental can be the easy solution for this resolution. With the storage unit in place, you can finally get rid of all that clutter that’s been filling your home or apartment. Why not start the new year off fresh? There is no need to wait for spring cleaning. Cleaning shouldn’t be a once a year event. Make a plan to go through your home once a month to see if there is anything you need to store, toss, donate, or sell. If you do a little bit at a time, it won’t build up into a full blown project. It won’t be nearly as overwhelming if you do a little bit at a time.

But don’t use the Texas storage as a place to dump all your stuff. Don’t turn that space into a hoarder’s dream home. Let 2012 be a year not filled with useless stuff.

Climate Controlled Units for Old Toys

storage unit TexasAs we grow older, the toys we once loved seem to disinterest us more and more. But there is something that tugs at our hearts and we simply cannot part with them. So instead of tossing your old teddy bear in the trash, you hide him in the closet. A few years later, after a spring cleaning, you discover him tucked away in the back. You’re about to throw him out, thinking he’s too old to give away. But what if you decide to have children someday or even grandchildren. Stuffed animals and other toys are great hand-me-downs.

Even if you don’t have anyone to pass them along to, you never know what they might be worth. If you have the original packaging, even better.

Storage Units for Your Extreme Couponing Habits

storage locationMy sister recently confessed that she into extreme couponing. If you’ve never been subjected to the reality television show and have no idea what it is, it basically means going crazy with coupons. Typically, you have to buy in bulk to get the discounts. It’s all about knowing how to combine coupons and to use those coupons on top of already existing sales. It’s a bit time consuming, but it’s worth it in the end when you end up spending $5 on a $60 purchase, getting items for free, or have the store actually owe you money because of all the discounts. Yes, that is possible.

But like I said before, you have to buy in bulk. Do you always have to buy 100 rolls of toilet paper? No, but you’ll definitely have more items than you can use in a month. That’s why you should consider placing non-perishable items in climate control storage units. On the reality show, you’ll notice many people end up turning a spare room into a separate pantry to keep all this stuff. But if you’re tight on space and big on savings, a Texas storage unit is the solution. You won’t have to convert your child’s room into a walk-in pantry nor to you have to worry about being buried under a  giant stack of paper towels.

Placing Gifts in Your Storage Location

storage locationWe’ve made it past Thanksgiving and now we await the triumphant return of Christmas and Chanukah. I can practically smell the sweet scent gingerbread cookies in the air and the fresh pine of an evergreen tree. Soon our homes will be filled with glitter, snowmen, and a stack of presents as high as the ceiling. If you have little ones in the home, they’ll be determined to hunt each gift down. The poor things just can’t wait to rip open all their new toys!

Instead of hiding gifts in the trunk of your car like last year, why not take a trip out to your storage location? The kids will certainly never make their way to the storage unit! It’s an easy solution and no one will ever guess where you put the gifts. Not only is it the spot for your kids’ gifts, your spouse probably won’t think to look their either. It’s practically a full proof plan unless your significant other has a stroke of genius (or also reads this blog).

For gifts that don’t do well in fluctuating temperatures, ensure they are placed in climate control storage units instead. Just remember to bring the gifts out of storage when the time comes.

High Level Security for Your Belongings

Texas storageIf you’re relying on a company for climate control storage units, you want to be assured that your belongings are going to be well protected. Storage unit break-ins are actually fairly common. People see it as an easy opportunity to raid your stuff without worrying about you being there. As much as we would all love CIA level security access complete with eye and fingerprint scanners, we have to settle for second best.

Proguard Storage prides themselves in their multiple security features. Slip-in cylinder locks provide dead-bolt level protection. It will be nearly impossible to break into storage units Texas unless thieves want to lug around heavy tools. But they won’t get passed 8′ barbed-wire fences. All facilities are accessed through individual entry codes and computerized doors and gates. That’s pretty high-tech, and awesome, if you ask me. If that wasn’t enough, there is video surveillance cameras that stream directly into the manger’s office. And there will always be people on-site monitoring your possessions. Hallways and buildings are all well-lit so you can easily see who’s on the premises.

You should never have to sit up day and night wondering if your belongings are still there. Get peace of mind with the exceptional service of Proguard Storage.

Less Is More

storage unit TexasWhen I moved recently, I noticed I had quite an extensive collection of books. I do have an English degree after all so it’s not surprising. But as I began packing up my books, I realized just how much they weigh. Even the weight of paperbacks can quickly add up. It wasn’t long before the box became incredibly heavy. And that box barely had any books in it! Yes the ugly truth is that unless you invest in a Kindle, you’re going to need about ten boxes just for one small bookcase.

The best way to pack up your books for Texas storage is to pack a few books in a box with other items that weigh significantly less. If you also have a large collection of DVDs, they are light enough to pack with the books. Or at least that’s what I was forced to do. I recommend continually testing the weight of each box as you add items. Keep in mind that while it might not feel too heavy to carry, it will quickly weigh you down if you need to carry boxes up and down stairs or walk long distances.

If anything, you can pack each box lightly for transport and then condense when you arrive at the self storage units Houston. But when it’s time to move out of storage, you’ll need to redistribute the weight once again.
