Avoid Scams!

It’s important to watch out for moving and storage scams — take a look at the video below to see what an expert on the matter has to say, so you can avoid any Houston self-storage and moving drama.

She discusses several types of scams, including:

  • The Hostage, in which, because the company already has your belongings, it can charge you extra and, as the name suggests, hold your stuff hostage
  • The Bait and Switch, in which you’ve already paid for one option and then the company makes up new charges and, again, because it have your belongings, hold them ransom.
She also strongly advises against:
  • Giving a deposit. In a way, your furniture is your deposit. Don’t pay the company any money until your things have been returned to you in the same condition they left you.
  • Signing a partial contract. If there are any blanks, don’t sign it. Anything could be written into your blanks, but it will have your signature, which is hard to contest.
  • Putting your furniture in a truck with no name. Any reputable company will have a truck with their name on it. Also take a look at the condition of the truck, as an indicator of how it’s driven.
  • Try to avoid paying cash at all costs. It’s one thing to tip someone in cash, but to pay what you actually owe, use a check or credit card.
Your best bet is to find a Houston self-storage company like ProGuard Self-Storage, which can recommend a number of good moving companies.
