Mama’s Non Climate Controlled Storage Faux Pas
We want to store our things somewhere safe, where we won’t have to worry about mold or rust or any other kind of water damage or theft or a shady storage man trying to pull the wool over our eyes. I remember my mother telling me a story about one of her experiences in Brooklyn in the ‘80s.
She used some place that wasn’t even climate controlled storage to hold her furniture while she was away in St. George helping my father enroll in medical school. When she returned she had all of her things back, except an antique bureau. She knew that they had it and were holding out on her, probably looking to sell it or do whatever it is they used to do with stolen furniture.
She went to court. Eventually after waiting five hours to see a judge, the same beefy blockhead, the defendant, told her that they had found her bureau. What a headache.
But that was a different time and a different place. I said, Ma you should’ve just chosen climate controlled storage units. If I had known, she said. I’m glad we do, and that we are getting climate controlled storage from the get-go.
