Preserving Old Photographs

climate control storage unitsIf you are interested in preserving old family photographs, or new ones, for future generations to enjoy, you will need more than just climate control storage units. You will need to acid-free boxes and paper, a black magic marker, and the willingness to browse through your crazy family photos!

Start by getting rid of those magnetic or peel and stick albums. Cheap photo albums and frames will damage the pictures over time. Only use a photo album that is acid-free. Remove any glue, staples, tape, rubber bands, and paper clips. All of said items can stain, scratch, and dent the photographs. If opting for a storage box, use either acid-free cardboard boxes or dry metal boxes. Use a black permanent marker to writes any names and dates on the back. Later generations will appreciate knowing who is who. Don’t use a pen because the ink will fade over time.

Place the photographs in plastic sleeves that do not contain PVC. You can purchase them at a local photo supply store. An budget-friendly alternative is plastic sandwich bags. To store large quantities, layer sheets of acid-free paper in between. Never place the photographs in attics, garages, or basements. Extreme temperature changes and moisture will surely damage them. Climate control storage units are the best option.
