Tips for Storing Clothing
Although you might be tempted to just toss your clothing in a box and put it in a storage location, you need to put a little more care if you expect your clothing to last through the following season. Using a storage rental is a great way to save space as the seasons change so you can make room for more fabulous clothes and not become buried in tank tops during the winter.
- Leather and suede should be covered with white muslin that’s been washed and laid flat. Supple leather should be protected with white tissue.
- Rayon should be stored flat too and covered with white tissue and muslin.
- Linen garments can be rolled instead of folded because it may form a permanent crease in the fabric.
- Knitted and silk fabrics should be stored flat, but if you have to hang them pad them with white tissue.
- Fur garments are actually best stored in a professional garment storage facility. Cold storage and delicate care to ensure the fur maintains well.
- Thoroughly clean wool before storing and use mothballs to protect them. I know they’re terrible and they smell, but they work.
Desiccants will help keep out moisture and are a good idea but do not let them touch the actual clothing.
